My test server started behaving like that a few weeks ago.
In my case I became convinced that the CPU had overheated at some point.
I ended up putting in a new MB and CPU. Since then all is fine, but I changed
from AMD to Intel, so it that does not mean too much.
I formed my opinion when kernels I had tested with before had become unreliable.
