Thanks a lot for that.  I have installed kdb and am getting the same problem, 
but I have not tried the above yet.

I don't think it is XFS related at this point, because it happens even if I am 
only exercising an ext3 FS.

This server must be incompatible with a vanilla 2.4.19 kernel.  It has worked 
well in the past with SuSE patched kernels.
