*If* the filesystem gets very full, files will tend to become
fragmented.  This is not unique to XFS.

How full was your filesystem?  Has it every been completely full?  I
ask this because many people I've dealt with with badly fragmented
filesystems have had completely full filesystems...  in such cases,
things are going to fragment or fail.
