There is another option.  There is a project out there to add rpm
support to apt.  Apt is the tool that allows Debian to upgrade from
release to release so easily.  There are several RedHat mirrors that
have aptified.  I'd recommend upgrading that way, just be careful to
keep your XFS enabled kernel.
