you are wrong. XFS has never left space for lilo (or any bootblock),
its been that way long before it ever was ported to Linux. but feel
free to try, just be ready for another ruined superblock.
the only explanation is your configuration was not what you thought it
was.

i don't use lilo anymore so im not that interested in doing the work,
but like i said its really only a matter of 2 or 3 lines of code.
