There are rumours of a library which provides the IRIX locking
primitives (on top of pthreads I believe) having been done by
the Performer guys, but I never saw any source & I'm not sure
where to find it, if it exists.

No, not for a long time (once upon a time we did that) - the man
page is in with the source now, and is not installed.
