Hi Mike,

As Hristo kindly points out, since this is an SGI IRIX box, 
you should contact your local SGI support for this problem.
Thanks.

It _may_ be the case that the tape drive is not fully
supported by the IRIX scsi tape driver.
Xfsdump uses more mt commands and status tests than
what tar uses.
