Yep, it looks like any I/O to that drive is failing... same thing from
xfs_repair:

#xfs_repair -v /dev/hdd1
Phase 1 -find and verify superblock...
superblock read failed, offset 0,size 524288, ag 0,rval 0

i.e. it's not saying that the superblock was bad, it's saying that it
cannot read any data from the disk.
