I already knew about these problems and had used LILO with the original
7.2 install. Neither system had any MD devices, just regular fs
partitions. I wanted to see if during the upgrade from 7.2 to 7.3 I
could successfully switch from LILO to GRUB, knowing that there were not
any MD, and one of the systems had only 1 disk.

My answer: switching from LILO to GRUB during the upgrade from 7.2 to
7.3 did not work for me.

Should anyone run into this problem, the solution is simple: Boot off
the SGI installer CD, then chroot /mnt/sysimage, edit /etc/lilo.conf,
run lilo (then I like to "sync" just to be sure) then reboot.

I also did a fresh install of 7.3 on a laptop and tried to install GRUB
(no MD devices here either), and that process complained that a file was
missing and dropped out to the grub> prompt and the install process
failed. I redid the install with LILO and it worked fine.
