If the machine locks up while X is running, you really need kdb on a
serial console to use it, unfortunately. A palm pilot will work, if you
have one. :)
If you can still get to a text console, though, do that and then enter
kdb and you should be ok.
I would be surprised if a locked up X has anything to do with the xfs
filesystem. For a while I had an X installation that was perfectly
happy to lock up on it's own. :)
