Yes they do both live in the same kernel. And if you run bleeding edge
kernels in production without prior testing and doing backups you can
get burnt. Disk drives get eaten every day, by mechanical, software and
hardware glitches, there is no substitute for a backup policy, pretty
much anyone with experience will tell you that.

So no matter what you do, backup your data - and seriously test your
hardware and software before putting it into production.

All of these scenarios seem to look like something overwrote a crucial
chunk of the filesystem, but there really is no way to tell what from
the information we have.
