You need to install the compat-egcs rpm, plus the compat-glibc rpm as
well. 

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to suss out if the problem was
compiler or code related... Steve said something about it being a bug in
some ancient IRIX code (nasty old crud that ;-P). 

If I knew were to look, I'd try to isolate the problem.
