I am not sure what your problem is with the kernel rpm...you may have to
unpack it and put it into the correct place.../vmlinuz, but it will *not*
work with just rpm -i.  this would not work on any system....you still
need to make your bootloader, whether it is lilo or the prom, point to the
image.

about the 2.3.x kernel...there is much that is not forward ported to this
kernel...dont be surprised if drivers, platforms dont work on it...it is a
alpha kernel after all.
