Hello,

Thank you for your email outlining the development of the Open Research
Compiler.

Here at SuperH we have been working with the Pro64 compiler for some time
now (initially within STMicroelectronics) and are currently in the
process of porting this technology to the SH-5 SHmedia instruction set
architecture, with the aim of supporting current and future SuperH
technologies. The current expectation is that we shall make an internal
beta release towards the end of November (this is unlikely to include
support for debugging) and a full release towards the end of Q1 2002. We
expect to have a demo available in time for Micro in December.

Are there any plans to:

1. Improve the infrastructure for configuring and building (e.g.,
selecting different targets) the Pro64 compiler?

2. Replace the GNU C and C++ frontends, including machine RTL
descriptions, currently taken from a snapshot of a 2.96 variant, with
the ABI modified 3.x frontends?

3. Release any of the missing SGI documentation for the current Pro64
compiler or document the ORC release?

We are commited to providing and supporting developement tools, for SuperH
architectures, based on Open Source technology, including the GNU tools
(i.e., GCC, binutils, GDB, and Linux) and the Pro64 compiler. Of course,
we would hope to intergrate our work on the Pro64 with a future release
of ORC.

We look forward to meeting and talking with you at Micro in December.
