git history doesn't travel with files like it does for CVS etc., as
git does not store file operation history, only the
before/after-images of the entire directory tree.  diffs are derived
on demand from those images, and may be stored in packs as an
optimization.  Use git-log --follow / git-diff -M/-B/-C to ask those
tools to find history harder.
