Oh absolutely, this is well known.  On the flip side, many people need these
higher logging rates for real-world production performance analysis as has been
my experience and we are constantly finding from others ... so one persons
"blowout" is anothers "urgent requirement".

But anyway, this change was not intentional at this stage.  And I see that
src/pmmgr/TODO already lists archive compression as a future work item, and
native archive compression is in the roadmap too, so I think we're done here.
