This issue is clearly in my court, and I apologize to Todd for not
coming to closure ... I'll try to do that over the next week or so.

We'd like to declare the 2.3 release "done" as soon as possible, so I'd
consider this to be the first candidate for inclusion in a 2.4 "dev"
release soon thereafter.
