I think Nathan answered this one already, but you should use pmlogger
to create the archive.  See pmlogger(1), or chapter 7 of the PCP User
and Admin guide from the techpubs.sgi.com website.

Also, take a look in /var/pcp/config/pmlogger for some sample pmlogger
configuration files.

If you're looking to create logs over a long period, consider setting
up a managed pmlogger instance, see pmlogger_daily(1), and then merging
the logs from several days together with pmlogextract(1).
