Kevin Wang gave me (thanks) a temperature sensor that consists of a
standard DB-9 serial port connector, a length of telephone cable, some
small parts from Dallas Semiconductor Corporation (DS2480 and DS1280 I
think from the source, but I cannot find these dcumented at their
website http://www.dalsemi.com, so maybe there are newer or different
parts ... Kevin?), and some open source from Dallas to drive this
gizmo.
42 minutes later I had a working PMDA (I think this is the fastest one
yet) exporting the temperature in celsius and fahreheit.
The attached data (ascii below and a pmchart snapshot in the
attachment) shows the temperature changes from the ambient in my hotel
room, then holding the sensor in my hot little hand, then stuffing the
sensor in the freezer of the refrigerator, then wandering about in the
morning sun in northern California with my laptop under my arm ....
Once I clarify some details of how these gizmos are multiplexed on a
single serial port, I'll merge the PMDA code into the base PCP source
for the open source release and IRIX.
Now PCP can help all those folks with wine cellars, machine rooms and
fancy air conditioning controls at home ... 8^)>
