a different shell environment, and that exposed it ...

One issue here is the rcp/rsh access to the remote hosts for the
login pcpqa that I mentioned earlier.
There may be another lurking issue here, but it is hard to tell
until the first matter is resolved ... please re-run and send
me the 603.out.bad file if it fails again.
