I'm seeing this appearing in the output files ...

send-mail: Cannot open mail:25

A quick google search suggests this is a systemic issue, e.g.
http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/73083/set-up-local-mail-delivery-to-user-from-cron-script

And indeed

# yum remove ssmtp

changes the "problem" to

/usr/sbin/sendmail: No such file or directory
. . . message not sent.

but this does also remove "smartmontools" which seems like it may be a problem.

So I reinstalled ssmtp and smartmontools.

What is the recommended way to address this?

Note that installing postfix (with no configuration) has no impact ... the
original problem persists.

On the other hand, removing postfix and installing sendmail resolves the issue.
