Strangely, make by hand, as in,

dies differently in the python code ... which suggests another problem related
to perhaps some change in the configure plumbing between Makepkgs and
qa/admin/myconfiguire (yep, see below, looks like Makepkgs and
qa/admin/myconfigure don't agree on python3 or not)
