This machine does not have either avahi-tools or avahi rpms installed
(so no local avahi-daemon).

Is the right thing to do here to hide this message behind pmDebug and
DBG_TRACE_DISCOVERY?  (as in attached patch)

Sorry -- this got lost in my inbox. Yes, that message should be hidden behind pmDebug and I see that you've already pushed that change.
