build problem/regression

I am seeing this

grep: ../pmcd.conf: No such file or directory
/bin/sh: 1: [: -eq: unexpected operator

anyone been tinkering around the makefile goo that builds pmcd.conf?

I think this is a recently introduced issue, or else I've just missed it 
in the past million builds I've done.
