Ken,

This did the trick. I put the empty root file back and performed the
steps you outlined below. The root file is now populated. 

I'm using PCPMON 1.2.0 and I did notice a lack of predefined expressions
to use. Is there a place where I could find a broader set of predefined
expressions for linux? If not, where is the best place to start reading
up on how to build them (i.e. comprehensive list of metrics etc).
