/etc/rc.d/init.d came from - what do "rpm -qf /etc/rc.d/init.d"
and "ls -l /etc/rc.d/init.d" say on your machine?

Redhat has an /etc/rc.d/init.d directory, and /etc/init.d is a
symlink there. But, when you built the srpm from source, your
packages should have pointed to the right place on SLES (this
works on SGI systems, and I checked on the one SGI box I still
have access to) ... so, I think something (else) has incorrectly
created this directory on your system.

cheers.
