(Technically, my proposed change would consist of nothing other than
including a generated ./configure file in git, and removing direct
invocations of autoconf from the few places it is mentioned. Not
risky really, due to autoconf's compatibility.)

If necessary ... but actually using old autoconf, and adding
.../configure --without-ssp --without-pie
makes the status quo work on rhel4 also.
