--- Comment #3 from Ken McDonell <kenj@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> 2010-05-07 01:32:20

Please disregard my previous analysis ... I accidentally picked mapped (not
derived) rather than mmapped (derived).
In the current state of the universe there is no way that pmchart and pmlogger
can work together to _record_ an archive using the name of a derived metric.
pmlogger has its own fetch routine, by-passing all the derived metric
translations so it sends the derived metric (not the operands) to pmcd and gets
back PM_ERR_NOAGENT (the domain number is 511). Even if I fix this and make
the pmlogger fetch routine aware of derived metrics, all hell will break lose
when pmlogger asks for one pmid and gets back a pmResult that does not contain
that pmid but does contain a bunch of pmids that are not named in the pmlogger
configuration file.
I think the only options here are (a) log the operand metrics directly (don't
use record mode from pmlogger), or plot and record the operand metrics from
pmchart and then play derived metric games later.
Neither is attractive. I need to think some to decide if the root cause can be
addressed, but I'm not overly optimistic.
