The rest of this thread makes sense, but this part, about setting
hostname to "-s", baffles me. I'd expect it to get set to whatever was
the output (to fd == 1) of:
hostname -s
This might be an error message, or, if that message went to fd == 2, the
empty string. I doubt that said error message was, in its entirety,
the two character string "-s".
