Ok.

I think for now the simplest thing to do would be to check if the file
exists before trying to run sed over it and not do anything if file
does not exists. As I've said, those files are only used for packaging
and if there is no packing for Gentoo yet then we don't really need them.

But before you do that, can you try running make install with
DIST_ROOT pointing to some directory other then root?
