Please note that the preferred, modern way of doing tunneling is using
iproute2.  This way, one need not enable sit0 device unnecessarily (also
enabling automatic tunneling in the process).  E.g.:

# /sbin/ip tunnel add sit1 mode sit remote a.b.c.d ttl 64
# ifconfig sit1 up

Please note that newer distributions provide "user-friedlier" ways of
creating tunnels, e.g. RHL72 (see /usr/share/doc/initscripts-*/ and
http://www.bieringer.de).
