Sigh -- I shouldn't post at 4am ;-)
I should have made it clear that the above quoted RFC is 2.5 material.
Removing init_etherdev removes a race, and uses an official API (as of
2.4.3), and so that's 2.4 material. Not urgent, but still 2.4 material
since it fixes a race.
