Someone else reported this to me a couple of weeks ago, and I remain
baffled.  Try writing a simple program that opens (and closes)
/dev/profile -- see if that works.  Try deleting the /dev/profile node
and then recreating it.  See if "ls -l /dev/profile" works (vs.
something like "ls -l /dev/profile*") to see if there might be some
unprintable character in the namespace.  And please let me know what you
discover.
