One of the really big decisions we made in our kitchen was to actually remove some cabinets. I wanted character and storage and I didnt just want more painted cabinets.
This hutch was a Craigslist find. I did want something old; but the one I loved from the flea market broke. By putting in the hutch, I actually gained more organized storage, and it gave us a few more inches as standard cabinets are 24 inches and the hutch is only 19. Plus, the average cabinet is roughly 250.

Carla in Fremont, Indiana writes
"I wanted the kitchen to function as the center of my home, but it was separated from the living
and dining rooms. The existing late-1970s kitchen cabinets were missing doors, drawers were missing
fronts, and the tile countertop was falling apart. The stove was isolated from the counters and
sink, and the refrigerator was smack in the middle of the kitchen, interrupting any useful workflow.
We took the
kitchen down to the studs and added windows to bring light into the space. We removed a
load-bearing wall that defined the breakfast nook and incorporated a hallway into the kitchen,
opening it up to the living and dining rooms.
The kitchen is now an airy, functional space that is central to the flow of the home."
