Most of us remember the days when watching a movie meant driving to Blockbuster, renting a tape, bringing it home, watching it on a VCR and then driving back to Blockbuster to return it. Most of todayâs kids, however, have had access to DVD and Blu-ray players â not mention Netflix and Hulu â for most of their lives, so VCRs are a totally foreign phenomenon. In the latest installment of the âKids Reactâ YouTube series, children ages 6 to 12 are seated in front of an old TV, a VCR and a pile of VHS tapes. Then they attempt to operate them. Naturally, it doesnât go very well.

Magnetism

The secret of how VHS tapes work is magnetism. The recording heads on the tape are electromagnets that draws particles of metal onto the tape

in patterns set by the TV signals. As the tape goes past the

recording heads, the signals are recorded from the

electrical signal onto each of the heads of the tape.

Connection

For a VHS tape to be recorded on, it must be

attached to the TV signal. When the record button

is pressed, the machinery within a VCR draws forth a loop of tape from between the two reels located inside the cassette.

The tape slowly winds around a rotating drum that draws it over

the recording head where the signals are imprinted.

Playback

In order to watch the signals that

have been recorded onto the electromagnetic tape, the cassette must be reloaded. The signals that are stored on the tape will,

when the VCR is activated to play mode, produce electrical signals in the head used for playing back video. The result is the feeding of

video and audio signals to the television set where the recording is actually recreated on the screen.
