The blinking caps lock and scroll lock mean that the kernel has dropped
into kdb.  You have to be using a text console, not X11 and the console
must be directed to the current screen, not to another virtual tty.  If
the problem occurs while you are in X11, use a serial console instead
and debug via the serial console.
