What Happens During a Stroke If something happens to interrupt the flow of blood, brain cells start to die within minutes because they cant get oxygen. This is called a stroke. Sudden bleeding in the brain also can cause a stroke if it damages brain cells. A stroke can cause lasting brain damage, long-term disability, or even death. http://www.cdc.gov/stroke/about.htm
Having AFib puts many in danger for strokes.

Strokes are a leading causes of death in the US.

Having AFib puts you at greater probability of having a stroke.
When you have atrial fibrillation (AFib), your risk of stroke is 5 times higher than someone without AFib. You need to take this risk very seriously, because:

  1. The outcome is almost twice as likely to be fatal
  2. The chances of having another major stroke increases
  3. disability is more likely to be severe

People with AF can have multiple strokes, including silent strokes (strokes that don't show physical symptoms but show up on a brain scan) that, over time, can cause dementia, so prevention is important.
