Hi Jack,
Thanks for the response; understand completely about
the job pressures ;^)
The failure mode is the equivalent of someone hitting
the reset button on the box after the kernel prints
the following:

VFS: Mounted root (reiserfs filesystem) readonly.
Freeing unused kernel memory: 272k freed
---------------------------------------------------------
Normally, the kernel would go on to starting up INIT, etc.:

Freeing unused kernel memory: 272k freed
INIT: version 2.85 booting
System Boot Control: Running /etc/init.d/boot
