Another kdb question

I've gotten kdb patch installed with kernel 2.4.18.  However I'm having 
trouble getting output when I press the Pause key which should break me into 
the debugger.  Something is obviously alive because the keyboard leds are 
flashing and if I type go then everything is back where I started.

So my question, what assumptions does kdb make about the console for output 
??  

Any hints would be appreciated.
