Big News: Girl About Town comes to Seattle Spin. Sign up for the premiere Oct 22nd issue.

Treasures: Emerald City Search, starting Oct 17th, free.  This is kinda cool.  Starting on the 17th, the Times publishes a clue per day, for ten days, on the location of a medallion.  Add up the clues, be the first to find the medallion and execute its directions, and then win a wad of cash.  *  Also, Celebrating Historic Treasures , Oct 22nd, by donation.  There's some real treasures at Seattle Public Library, not readily publicly accessible.  Go see some of the rare and historic items tucked away in the archives.

Lectures: The New HPV Vaccine and the Research Behind it in our Own Back Yard, Oct 20th, $15, on the leading work for developing a vaccine.  These sorts of lectures always seem to dish out about equal parts concern and hope.  *  Also, Japan's Interaction with the West: The Visual Record, Oct 18th, $25, geared towards K-12 educators.  *  Also, Critical Controversies in Korean Criminal Law, Oct 22nd, free.  Korea is a great place to live, unless you get in trouble - they don't mess around.  *  Also, The Crucified God , Oct 23rd, free.  No description on this one, so you can tell us what it's about.  *  Also, Making Connections, Oct 23rd, free with admission, a reading and presentation from the works of three anthropologists with some Pacific-Rim cultures and the results of their ethnographic research.

Family: Talking to Your Kids About Sex , Oct 16th, free.  This is always a fun subject.  Here's how to talk to your kids and teens.  Not only do you need a game plan on what to say, you need to be prepared to hear what they may tell you.  It's all part of being human, so learn how to help your kid grow up to be a happy and healthy (sexual) person.  *  Also, Family Boatbuilding , starting Oct 20th, take on a family project together and trust the fate of your family to the handiwork of your kids.

Senior Items: RV Living, Oct 20th, $15, on how to take your home with you.  Owning an RV seems good in theory, until you start paying the bills and performing the maintenance.

Dating: NW Dating Expo, Oct 20th, $99.  Get a brain dump from the local pros on getting your dating game together in this all-day seminar.  Sessions include The Tantric Art of Kissing & Touching, Become a "10" & Attract a "10", and Dating for Ding-Dongs .  *  Also, Speed Dating on Oct 23rd and 30th, $40, mini-dates with prospects with the same motivation as you.  *  Also, Man Meets Women comes to town, 19-21st, $900+.  Ever since the 2005 release of The Game, there's been high interest in the ways of seduction.

Fair: Emergency Preparedness Fair , Oct 20th, free, 10 AM - 2 PM at the LDS Church at 14536 Main Street in Bellevue.  When the big one comes, you'll be glad you spent a couple of hours at this fair.  Experts share tips and information on how your family can survive for 72 hours when everything is in crumbles.  After going to this fair, commit yourself to doing one thing within 24 hours.  After one of these fairs, it's easy to have a bundle of enthusiasm, but unless acted upon, it quickly evaporates.  As long as you're at it, check out 3Days3Ways for more information.

Restaurant: Daily Grill , a value steakhouse in downtown Seattle.  The Sheraton Hotel completes its major renovation, and this is their corner restaurant.  This place picks up the 40's swank with oversized mahogany booths and black-and-white historic photos lining the wall.  This place works best on the American dishes, of the chicken pot pie, ribs, and meatloaf variety.

Astronomy: Astronomical Society Meeting, Oct 17th, free, a pro explains how he home-built his award winning telescope, and you can  too.  And, that's for star watching, not neighbor snooping.  *  Also, Star Party , Oct 20th, free.  The astronomy pros set up their telescopes and invite the public to view in to see what's up there in the night sky.

Gala: Charity Dinner & Masquerade Ball at the Columbia Tower Club, Oct 19th, $150. You could go to all of the $250+ per ticket charity galas in Seattle this year, and not find a better occasion to wear a ball gown. A live auction and four course dinner is served with wine over the best city view of Seattle. These masquerade balls are exotic affairs, of elegance, intrigue, Venetian romanticism, all for a surreal spectacle. The best entertainment of the night will be guessing, "Who is that?"

Organization: Pomegranate Center, working on the noble goal of creating community meeting places that combine art, environment, and social values.  The town square and front porch are gone, so this organization helps us create connected neighborhoods where people can gather for entertainment, play, and conversation.

Thinking about Halloween
Getting a start on what's coming up...

Kids: Pacific Science Center Spooky Hike, Oct 26-28th, $8, kids come face-to-face with creatures of the night, hear nighttime tales on the trail, and get up close and personal with creepy crawlies.  Maris Farms Haunted Woods , $15, walking through the field while Jason is waiting to leap out at you.

Adults: Haunted Harbor, Oct 27th, $21,  drink grog along with the Seafair Pirates and dance the zombie thing to Michael Jackson's Thriller.  Also, Untamed on the 27th, $25, is doing its thing.

Activities: Zombie Walk, Oct 21st, free.  Zombies on the prowl looking for brains.  Actually, this one may have jumped the shark , becoming too big, popular, and (gasp) mainstream.  Still, if you're interested mobbing with your undead homies, like, what other options do you have?

Cool Video: Here's a Zombie Walk from the U Village last year:

Eastside Events, published about once every three weeks.  The Eastside actually has a lot of great places and events going on; the difference is they're a little more hidden.  This publication brings to light the best of what's happening on the other side of the water.   Follow to subscribe.

Gala Calendar , published once a month.  Plan ahead for the next gala or formal event.  If the only time you put on the evening wear and sparkle is the company holiday party, then you're missing a lot of Seattle.  It seems like the only time the media covers a gala is afterwards, when they're printing the photos of what already happened and describing what a good time you missed.  If you'd like to learn of a great party beforehand instead, then you just might end up as the pretty person in the published photo sometime!  Follow to subscribe.
