Gala: Charity Dinner & Masquerade Ball at the Columbia Tower Club, Oct 19th, $150. You could go to all of the $250+ per ticket charity galas in Seattle this year, and not find a better occasion to wear a ball gown. A live auction and four-course dinner is served with wine and the best city view of Seattle. These masquerade balls are exotic affairs, of elegance, intrigue, Venetian romanticism, all for a surreal spectacle. The best entertainment of the night will be guessing, "Who is that?"

Opera: Opera Night Singers , Oct 21st (with monthly dates), an ensemble dedicated to opera's best arias and ensemble. This could be the most romantic thing you do all year. You got the double treat of dining at a romantic spot over sumptuous cuisine while talented opera singers perform opera's best works. The heart is sure to move. Let's just say, you'll definitely be ordering dessert.  If a trip to Milan isn't in your future, this could be the next best thing. * Also, Iphigenia in Tauris at Seattle Opera opens, starting Oct 13th, $25+. This is composer Gluck's best work, coming near the end of his life, because he took everything he learned and borrowed from others and summed it all up in this opera.

Party: Kilt and Mini Bash, coming up on Nov 10th, $40. This classic to the Seattle scene returns after a multi-year absence. More good-looking legs than a Thoroughbred farm.  A party with manly men, naughty little school girls, and ample eye candy for both genders.  This is one of the top ten parties on the Seattle social landscape this year.

Theater: Queen of Blues , until Nov 18th, $18, a production on the life and times of blues singer Dinah Was. If the point of blues isn't to make you feel good, but to make other people feel miserable, then this succeeds. This traces in song the hard times and triumphs of "Queen of Blues" Dinah Washington and her tumultuous life, half dozen husbands and dozen-plus lovers.* Also, Jersey Boys , $31+. The show doesn't start until December, but it's a good one, so the tix are already going. This is the story of Frankie Valli and his boys, their rise to the top and their associations with the mob.

Aviation: 17th Seattle Airline Collectibles Show, Oct 13th, $5. Did you hear about the toilet seat from the Concord selling for £1,800 at auction ? Maybe these folks are onto something. Vendors and traders vying for rare airline memorabilia here. * Also, Flying for Her Country: Women Aviators of World War II, Oct 13th, free with admission. Self-Betterment: Attention Scientists! Avoid The 13 Deadly Science Career Mistakes , Oct 17th. They may be brain-heads, but that doesn't mean they know how to manage the nuances of career growth. Learn the common pitfalls and how to prosper. * Also, Building Personal Safety Nets , Oct 9th, free. It's like insurance - you gotta think ahead before the disaster comes. Here's how to put together the plans, resources and people when you need it most.  * Also, author Amanda Ford reads from her book, Kiss Me, I'm Single, Oct 16th, free, on discovering yourself and your own passion when you're single.

Fundraising Walks: Walk for Autism, Oct 13th. Autism is still frustratingly baffling, and unfortunately, the cases are growing. Walking is an easy way to help make that difference. * Also, Dawg Dash , Oct 14th, $25. Start homecoming with a 10K run or 5K walk through the UW Campus. With the changing of the leaves, this is the best time of the year for a stroll through the grounds.

Resource: PrivateDine , the newest and largest private dining directory covering 4,000+ restaurants in 17 markets. Basically, if you're searching for private or large group dining, then this site has the options for you. It's easy to think of this site right now for Christmas parties, else for corporate dinner meetings, rehearsal dinners, and family celebrations.

Theater Tours
Some of
Seattle 's oldest and grandest buildings are the theater buildings. If you don't have the star power to make it to the backstage, you can take the tour instead. These tours are great for groups, too.

BackStage

5th Avenue Theater, by appointment, $100 for up to 20 guests, where you get to see every nook and cranny of this architectural gem. Supposedly, they have a resident ghost around the place. What they do have are very steep, pre-building code, backstage steps. Take one misstep, and you'll end up being the next theater ghost.

Paramount Theater, free on the first Saturday of every month, and the Moore Theater , free on the second Saturday of the month. The Paramount Theater went through a big renovation in 1995, so it's like stepping back to its 1920 art-deco prime. The Moore is celebrating its 100-year anniversary, so they're especially proud of the building right now.

ACT Theater, you gotta go through the Seattle Architectural Foundation (who also has their schedule of tours) for the theater tour. What's cool is their building started life as an Eagles Lodge for fraternity rejects. Not to many theater companies have their own banking safe deposit boxes.

It's worth mentioning that Qwest Field and Safeco Field also have tours. The cool thing about these is going through the locker rooms where the million-dollar jocks spend their time.

Cool Video: A Harry Potter satire in The Mysterious Ticking Noise. The kids seem to think this one is funny.

Eastside Events, published about once every three weeks.  The Eastside actually has a lot of great places and events going on; the difference is they're a little more hidden.  This publication brings to light the best of what's happening on the other side of the water.   Follow to subscribe.

Gala Calendar , published once a month.  Plan ahead for the next gala or formal event.  If the only time you put on the evening wear and sparkle is the company holiday party, then you're missing a lot of Seattle.  It seems like the only time the media covers a gala is afterwards, when they're printing the photos of what already happened and describing what a good time you missed.  If you'd like to learn of a great party beforehand instead, then you just might end up as the pretty person in the published photo sometime!  Follow to subscribe.
