I have been booting an embedded ARM board for about two weeks now using
devfs without devfsd. Works great, as long as you don't expect too much
from things like init (which seems to get slightly confused).

yellow:/tmp# ls -CF /dev
console initctl| mem port pts/ tts/ zero
cua/ kmem null printers/ pty/ tty
full loop/ parports/ ptmx random urandom
yellow:/tmp# cat /proc/cpuinfo
Processor : ARM/VLSI ARM 710 rev 0 (v3l)
BogoMIPS : 24.22
Hardware : CL-PS7500
Revision : 0000
Serial : 0000000000000000
