Actually, devfs will wait for devfsd to finish processing an event. Devfsd and all its children have special access to the filesystem. So if you were to have an action which logged the permissions, and then you have a PERMISSIONS action, the logging programme will see the original permissions before they are changed by PERMISSIONS. However, I don't think that is relevant to your problem.

Anyway, I'm on holidays, so don't expect speedy followup
responses. Good luck, and please let me know how it goes.

Richard,

This is still happening wierder than ever. I don't know what to do. It is seemingly
random, and I can at least open terms now, however, what I have to do it start so many
in rapid succession that X & KDE bog down, and after 5 or 10 seconds about 15
will start to open, maybe four or five will survive, the rest will report 'unable to
open slave pty .....'

What can I do? Do I try a re-install? [I suspect the sames results in the end, but am
willing to try]. ....... Maybe I will drop back to kernel 2.4.3, and see.

thanks, joshua
