This came up on the LKML about a week or so ago, and persists in the
latest devel kernels with DevFS. Seems more suitable to throw it over to the
DevFS list, so here ya go. I'm getting the same problem. Anyone know anything
about this?

Subject: 2.5.19-20 rootfs naming with devfs
Precedence: bulk
X-Mailing-List: linux-kernel@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
grub requires this for being able to mount the root fs
(/dev/hde2) at boot time :
root=/dev//dev/ata/host2/bus0/target0/lun0/part2
boot fails when the prefix is different from /dev//dev/ata.
This feature was introduced in 2.5.19
