I guess that could explain it. When I get home from work I'll reboot the
box and check how the permissions/ownerships are arranged at different
stages of booted-ness. I am assuming that if I tell lilo to use /bin/sh
instead of init the PAM stuff won't be at all involved so I can try and
rule that out as a possibility.
