  Well, I can answer my own question.  Nothing like sending
  a question to an Email-list, to clear the mind and reveal
  the blindingly obvious.

  It seems that I was confused between vc and vcc.

  That leaves only one question: What is the preferred way
  for mingetty to determine if devfsd is active ?
