You're not running devfsd, are you? You need this for the
compatibility names. Either that or edit your /etc/raidtab file.

Devfs allows drivers to overcome limitations imposed by the device
numbering scheme. Someone has to put in the work to update the Linux
SCSI and block device layers to make use of this. Until this, the
existing limitations remain.
There is talk about doing this in 2.5.
