Hm. Try /dev/tty0 (/dev/vc/0) instead. There should be a device which
corresponds to your real console. In fact, if /dev/console doesn't go
to your (serial) console, I'd argue that it's a bug in the console
driver.

Anyway, I'll leave it for others to sort this out: I'm on holidays.
