<p>
XFS for Linux Release 1.2 supports the x86 architecture
and, through patches, the IA-64 architecture. XFS 1.2 allows
you to choose the logical block size for a filesystem.
<p>
For a list of changes and bugfixes that have been
made in user space since the 1.1 release, see the

XFS Installation
</font></h2>
Because this release requires a 2.4 kernel, it may require some
updates to your system if you are currently running the 2.2.x series
kernels. Please see the latest
<a href="http://cyberbuzz.gatech.edu/kaboom/linux/Changes-2.4/changes24.html">
Linux 2.4 Changes</a> document for details on the minimum levels of software
necessary to install and run a Linux 2.4 kernel.
<p>
XFS Linux Release 1.2 is available through the following
distributions mechanisms:
<ul>
<li>
<p><b>Source installation</b>
</p>
<p>
SGI XFS Linux Release 1.2 is available as a patch
against linux-2.4.19.
XFS 1.2 is distribution-independent.
</p>
<p>
For a source installation, you start with a "vanilla" linux-2.4.19 tarball
(linux-2.4.19.tar.gz, or linux-2.4.19.tar.bz2) and apply patches to obtain
an XFS-capable kernel. For XFS Linux Release 1.2,
XFS comes as a single patch. A KDB (built-in kernel debugger) patch
is also available.
</p>
<p>
You can download
<a href="ftp://oss.sgi.com/projects/xfs/download/Release-1.2/kernel_patches/">
the release 1.2 patch files</a>
for both x86 and IA-64
architectures.
</p>
<p>
For instructions on creating the XFS tree with patchfiles,
see
<a href="source.html">Installing from the Source</a>.
</p>
</li>
<li>
<p><b>RPMs</b></p>
<p>
RPMs based on Red Hat's kernel source
have been provided for Intel x86, AMD Athlon.
See
<a href="1.2_rpm.html">Installing XFS from the RPM Packages</A>.
</p>
</li>
</ul>
If you want to install a new system to run XFS Linux Release 1.2,
there is an x86 system installer based on the Red Hat Linux 8.0 release,
with an XFS-enabled version of the 2.4.18-17 kernels. This installer
is available as an

ISO image</A>.
