It appears you did the "mt fsf" after the dump.
I meant for that to be done only when you were
doing a restore, and to do so after the xfsrestore
completed. The following sequence works for me:

You might want to try using variable block mode
on your tape device, if it supports it:

# mt -f /dev/nst0 setblk 0

Then do your backups:

# mt -f /dev/nst0 rewind
# xfsdump -f /dev/nst0 /home
# tar cvf /dev/nst0 /boot

And to restore:

# mt -f /dev/nst0 rewind
# xfsrestore -f /dev/nst0 /somepath
# mt -f /dev/nst0 fsf 1
# tar xvf /dev/nst0
